One law
Lord Ahmed, sentenced to twelve weeks in jail (six weeks suspended) for dangerous driving which resulted in the death of a man, is to be released after eighteen days in custody.
Lord Ahmed's public role and service were cited prominently in his defence at the Court of Appeal. They should have had no bearing on the case. The law should apply equally to all. A member of the House of Lords should be treated neither less nor more harshly than any man or woman in the street.
Whatever mitigating facts there may be in this matter, the perception of favouritism is unfortunate, to say the least. It would have been better if Lord Ahmed had served his time.
