New Party disappointed by CO2 advert adjudication delays
The news that the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) has delayed judgement on the controversial Act on CO2 advert until the New Year is disappointing, New Party leader Richard Vass said today, and urged the advertising watchdog to allocate more resources to draw an early conclusion. Covering press and television, the now infamous campaign from the Department of Energy and Climate Change was slammed on its release as "the worst possible state-funded propaganda" by the New Party, prompting it to lodge a complaint on 13 October. Hundreds followed, sending complaints to the ASA, but two months on and we are no closer to knowing whether this 'sickening' run of adverts is to be pulled, Richard Vass said today. And now we hear the councils will not be able to make a decision until the New Year. He says: "I understand the complexity of the issue. The ASA is investigating four separate press adverts and is investigating seven separate points of complaint regarding the TV campaign, but we were hoping for a resolution before the New Year. "With the leaked emails from the University of East Anglia's Climate Research Unit highlighting some of the nefarious tactics being used in the global climate debate, having a ruling on government advertising tactics is another important step in trying establish intelligent debate on the matter. "There is an underlying whiff of McCarthyism surrounding the whole carbon campaign that has prevented proper debate. We would like to see the ASA allocate more resources to such an important issue. And we hope they agree with us, and hundreds others, that this sickening advert needs to be withdrawn."
