Victory for the Gurkhas
Those that fight and risk their lives for this country deserve at the very least the right to live here. It is hard to see how this can be denied by any just government, but it is sadly true that both Conservative and Labour governments in the past have dragged their feet on the issue of the Gurkhas and their residency rights in this country.
Mercifully, the vote of the House of Commons yesterday, albeit on an opposition day motion tabled by the Liberal Democrats, has shown that our elected representatives are prepared to take the moral lead on an issue which the Prime Minister has largely shirked, notwithstanding some minor last minute concessions.
We hope that the government will now take the view of Parliament fully on board, and grant justice to a group of people whose dedication and service to this country has been second to none.
